Join us for a book reception and signing with Nick Kawa, author of After the Flush: Rethinking the Future of Human Waste.

Friday, October 16 | 1:00–3:00 PM
The Gallery Bookshop
319 Kasten St., Mendocino

What happens after you flush the toilet? Where does it all go, and what happens next?

In After the Flush, anthropologist Nick Kawa follows human waste through the modern sanitation system, exploring wastewater treatment, biosolids, environmental concerns, and the people working to rethink how we manage human waste. He also looks at alternatives to conventional sanitation, including compost toilets, container-based sanitation, and other ecological approaches.

The book invites us to reconsider something most of us rarely think about and to imagine new ways of understanding human waste as part of our relationship with our bodies, our communities, and the environment.

Redwood Forest Foundation Building
247 N. Main St., Suite C, Fort Bragg

What happens when a disaster disrupts our wastewater systems, or aging infrastructure can no longer keep up? How can our communities prepare for the challenges of human waste when the systems we rely on fail?

Join local community leaders, practitioners, and experts for a conversation about these often-overlooked challenges. Alisa Keesey, from the Santa Cruz community sanitation project, and Nick Kawa, author of When the Flush Fails: Rethinking the Future of Human Waste, will join Ted Williams, Bernie Norvell, and others to share experiences, ideas, and perspectives.

We’ll explore dry sanitation, composting toilets, ecological approaches, and other possibilities while considering practical solutions, potential community projects, partnerships, and next steps.

Come listen, ask questions, share your ideas, and help shape the conversation about building more resilient and sustainable sanitation systems in our community.

Meadow Farm Community Land Trust and LISTOS California invite you to a follow-up disaster preparedness class focused on community resilience and preparing together for emergencies.

Friday, October 23 | 12:30–2:00 PM
Caspar Community Center
15051 Caspar Road, Caspar

Building on our previous classes, we’ll take a deeper look at how we can prepare not only as individuals and households, but as neighbors supporting one another when disaster strikes. We’ll share practical information and ideas for sheltering in place, assembling go-bags, storing and purifying water, maintaining emergency food supplies, managing dry sanitation, preparing backup energy, first aid and medications, caring for pets, strengthening neighborhood communication and support, and learning about CERT classes.

We’ll also have a show-and-share of preparedness supplies and resources, with an opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from one another.

Go-bags and free preparedness resources will be available.

Free and open to all. Come learn, share, and build community resilience together!
