Disaster Preparedness Workshop at The Woods

We recently gathered at The Woods in Little River for a well attended two hour workshop on disaster preparedness, with both residents and community members joining the conversation. We explored practical ways households and communities can prepare for emergencies and build resilience, with discussion ranging from sheltering in place and food and water storage to sanitation and emergency power.

Food security was an important part of the conversation. We shared how Meadow Farm stores shelf stable foods such as rice, oats, beans, and legumes, along with simple ways to preserve garden produce through fermentation, pickling, and canning.

We reviewed basic water storage and purification, including the importance of storing additional water before heavy rainstorms and knowing how to safely collect and purify water in an emergency.

Sanitation was another important topic. We shared information about simple composting options, including Lovable Loos, five gallon buckets, and WAG bags, which can provide practical alternatives when regular sanitation systems are unavailable.

We also discussed emergency power options for individual households, including portable lithium battery systems, solar power, and emerging balcony solar technologies.

The workshop highlighted the many ways sustainable practices can also strengthen community preparedness and resilience.

We’re grateful to everyone who joined us and to The Woods for hosting the workshop. We look forward to continuing these conversations and building practical preparedness skills throughout our community.
